Second to the Kelty Summit in features, the Backcountry offers exceptional comfort and a wide array of features for both parent and child. The big difference (besides the significant savings in price) between this model and the top-of-the-line Summit are the laminated shoulder straps for the adult instead of molded foam shoulder straps. The good news is that this slight modification makes the Backcountry lighter in weight. Despite the long success of Kelty's child carriers, the Backcountry is a new product that's significantly easier and more convenient than last year's models. Redesigned features include easier loading, a new central tensioning adjustment system for the easier-to-use child harness and an improved parent torso adjustment mechanism. If you've checked out any of the previous Kelty packs, you may have seen a bungee-operated auto-deploying kickstand (never leave a child unattended in any pack with a kickstand device--it's there to help facilitate unloading the child). Kelty scrubbed the old bungee kickstand device and opted for a new and reliable internal mechanism that automatically deploys and retracts whenever you remove the pack from your back. The geometry of the child seat was redesigned to allow your child to sit in a more naturally reclined position--something you'll appreciate when your child eventually falls asleep to the swaying of your steady gait. The child harness has a five-point configuration--the same type successfully used in vehicle car seats for years--with a central adjustment feature for ease of use.
